Baker & McKenzie - CIS, Limited's team, headed by Vladimir Khvalei is best known for leading counsel on high-profile commercial arbitration cases in arbitration proceedings under the International Commercial Arbitration Court (ICAC), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and across the CIS regions. Standout mandates include acting for Manolium Processing in investment arbitration under Uncitral rules against the Republic of Belarus valued at $250m. Others to note are Edward Bekeschenko, is experienced in tech and telecom-related disputes, and associate Taisiya Vorotilova, who is active in commercial and insolvency-related disputes.

Clifford Chance has been significantly active in energy-related disputes, particularly in London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) proceedings. Timur Aitkulov, an experienced arbitrator and a member of the ICC Court, is involved in high-value international arbitrations in the chemical, retail and transportation space. Olga Semushina and Dmitry Malukevich are names to note.

Dechert Russia LLC ‘provides a first-rate service and top quality advice for reasonable fees’. Yuri Makhonin, who leads on international arbitration matters, ‘is very knowledgeable, committed and commercially driven’ and is a ‘superb litigator’. Alexander Lazarev moved to Rybalkin, Gortsunyan & Partners.

Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners is 'an internationally oriented law firm with very good connections in the local market’, which stands out for its ‘outstanding knowledge’ and a strong record in ‘domestic and international proceedings’. The ‘impressive’ practice is led by Evgeny Raschevsky, who is acting in a high-value commercial arbitration in India in a construction-related dispute. Dmitry Dyakin is active in significant domestic and international arbitral proceedings in the nuclear and industrial manufacturing space. Counsel Vladimir Pestrikov focuses on commercial arbitration and enforcement of foreign judgments and domestic arbitral awards. Tatyana Neveeva advises on the English law aspects of disputes and is particularly noted for contentious matters concerning shareholders' agreement and sales and purchase agreements.

Clients praise White & Case LLC for its ‘flexibility, expertise in a wide range of legal systems and the ability to quickly respond to changing circumstances’. Julia Zagonek and Pavel Boulatov form ‘an incredible tandem’ and combine ‘strong knowledge in procedural and substantive law’ with ‘an innovative approach’. The practice is notably active in investment arbitrations where it represents the Russian Federation. Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (Russia) LLP’s team of ‘highly qualified specialists’ provides ‘value for money’ and acts for a mix of financial institutions, energy and IT clients in domestic and major arbitral institutions. Roman Khodykin, who divides his time between the London and Moscow offices, is acting in a number of high-value international arbitration disputes, notably for energy sector clients. Elena Trusova is experienced in representing clients across a diverse range of industries in domestic and cross-border proceedings. Counsel Yury Babichev is active in commercial and investment arbitrations, where he regularly assists Andrey Goltsblat.

Dentons has notable capabilities in competition, private equity, finance and energy-related disputes. Mikhail Ivanov heads the Russia-wide dispute resolution practice, where he specialises in disputes between foreign investors and major Russian companies. Corporate partner Richard Cowie is active in private equity-related LCIA proceedings.

At DLA Piper, commercial litigator Yaroslav Moshennikov is representing Gazprom in two proceedings before the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce concerning gas supplies and transit through the Ukraine. Denis Sosedkin is also active in investment arbitration. Constantine Lusignan-Rizhinashvili and Julien Hansen are other names to note.

At Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, practice head Dmitry Surikov is acting alongside Paris-based Noah Rubins in representing Inter RAO, a leading energy company, and its Georgian and Dutch subsidiaries in SCC and ICSID arbitral proceedings relating to a breach by the state of Georgia concerning the adjustment of electricity tariffs following Georgia’s currency depreciation among other issues. Senior associate Maxim Pyrkov and counsel Alexey Yadykin are experienced in representing Russian and international clients in the oil and gas, energy and construction sectors in all major arbitration forums.

Herbert Smith Freehills CIS LLP draws on its expertise from its London office in handling high-value cross-border proceedings, and is particularly active in LCIA arbitral proceedings for energy, banking and finance, and IT sectors. Practice head Alexei Panich recently represented Royal Bank of Scotland, as part of a syndicate of European banks, against a multinational agricultural company in the enforcement of a $340m facility agreement in various forums. Alexander Khretinin, Maria Dolotova, Evgeny Uporov and Danil Guryanov are other names to note.

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP’s ‘highly professional and very well-connected’ team is led by Dmitry Ivanov, who is a ‘first-rate international lawyer with great strategic skills who always remains calm under pressure'. He and finance partner Grigory Marinichev are representing a major European bank in debt recovery LCIA proceedings. The team maintains close contact with its London office to advise on cross-border proceedings and is particularly active in debt recovery, restructuring and insolvency-related disputes and in the enforcement of arbitral awards.

Norton Rose Fulbright is best known for handling high-value disputes in the energy and natural resources sector and for the domestic enforcement of international arbitral awards. Head of Russia and the CIS -wide dispute resolution practice, Yaroslav Klimov and senior associate Andrey Panov are representing Russian clients across a mix of sectors in significant LCIA proceedings and Stockholm-seated ICC arbitrations.

ALRUD Law Firm's team ‘suggests unique solutions and strategies for complex cases’ and has a strong track record in representing automobile, retail and construction sector clients in commercial and insolvency-related disputes. Insolvency partner Sergey Petrachkov, who is ‘a very scrupulous lawyer who pays attention to every detail’, recently represented an automobile manufacturer before the International Commercial Arbitration Court at the Chamber of Commerce. Other figures to note from the cross-departmental team are Maxim Alekseyev, Andrey Zharskiy, Vassily Rudomino and Maria Ostashenko.

Hogan Lovells (CIS)' dispute practice is led by Alexei Dudko, who is 'an outstanding litigator and strategist’, and includes Denis Almakaev and Eugene Perkunov. The practice is notably involved in cross-border disputes in the white-collar crime, insolvency and product liability space, and counts Rosneft and Alibaba.com as recent clients. The team is representing the Russian Deposit Insurance Agency in complex multi-jurisdictional proceedings relating to fraud and insolvency charges against a Russian individual.

Anna Grishchenkova at KIAP (Korelskiy, Ischuk, Astafiev and Partners, Attorneys at Law) leads the arbitration practice where she is frequently involved in domestic and multi-jurisdictional proceedings in major European and Asian arbitration forums. She and Alexei Gurin are acting as co-counsel for a major bank in a fraud-related dispute before the LCIA. Other instructions include representing a Russian food manufacturer in an ICAC arbitration against a Dutch contractor. Natalia Kislyakova is also highly regarded.

Headed by ‘dedicated and highly experienced litigator’ Maxim Kulkov, KK&P TRIAL LAWYERS  has strong capabilities in representing clients in Russian and international arbitration forums, and is particularly active in debt recovery and the enforcement of arbitration awards. Oleg Kolotilov focuses on corporate, contractual and administrative disputes and is lauded for his ability to ‘offer clearly understandable and strategic solutions to the most complex questions’. Recent work includes representing a Russian aviation servicing company in a series of ICAC arbitral proceedings against a Ukrainian military equipment manufacturer, and representing an industrial constructor in a high-value ICAC commercial arbitration against a major Russian developer.

Linklaters' group is working as part of a multi-jurisdictional team in representing a leading Russian bank in ongoing multiple LCIA arbitration proceedings. Vladimir Melnikov, 'a well-respected figure in the disputes arena’, has extensive experience in multi-jurisdictional debt collection, bankruptcy proceedings and corporate disputes. He and London-based Matthew Weiniger are representing a Russian oil and gas corporate in an investment dispute arbitration against Ukraine.

Monastyrsky, Zyuba, Stepanov & Partners’ practice is composed of ‘reliable and resourceful experts who analyse each case in great depth with strong attention to detail and a high level of efficiency’. The practice is representing O1 Group in several LCIA arbitration proceedings brought by Bank Otkritie concerning the validity of a number of pledge termination agreements. Yuri Monastyrsky and Kirill Udovichenko are the main practitioners.
