Cobalt¬†is highlighted for its expertise in disputes in the infrastructure and transportation sectors in particular. Led by Rimantas Simaitis, the¬†firm has been representing Riga International Airport in a cross-border claim made by a bankrupt Lithuanian air carrier for ‚ā¨58 million in damages.¬†Public procurement specialist Deividas Soloveińćik¬†recently acted for a state enterprise in a contractual dispute with a telecoms provider which reached the Supreme Court. Paulius Markovas¬†¬†is¬†the key contact for contentious bankruptcy and restructuring matters, and¬†Mindaugas Bliuvas¬†¬†and associate¬†Marius Inta¬†are also names to note. The practice group has been strengthened by the arrival of a number of new associates who have joined from competing firms.

Ellex's lawyers¬†are¬†'experts in the field' and regularly act in cross-border disputes and arbitration. Co-led by Ramunas Petravicius¬†and Giedrńó AukŇ°tuolien, the team represented East Capital Baltic Fund¬†in claims for ‚ā¨10.5m in damages against one of the largest dairy producers in the Baltics. Vilija Vaitkute Pavan,¬†who also serves as an arbitrator, advised the Ministry of Justice¬†on a matter initiated by¬†Vladimir Antonov¬†of now-insolvent bank Snoras regarding the alleged expropriation of shares. The case was dismissed by the¬†Moscow District Commercial Court. Other highlights included corporate litigation expert¬†Egidijus Baranauskas¬†acting for a major tax institution in bankruptcy proceedings, assisted by senior associate Jovita Gabniene. The practice group saw the addition of new associate¬†Aiste Mikociuniene,¬†who joined from the¬†Ministry of Justice.

RamŇęnas Audzevińćius¬†leads the team at 'dispute resolution powerhouse'¬†Motieka & Audzevicius,¬†which excels in multi-jurisdictional¬†disputes.¬†Audzevińćius is noted for his 'great strategic direction' and co-head Jovitas Elzbergas¬†for his 'valuable insight'. In recent work, the firm successfully represented flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines before the¬†Court of Justice of the European Union in a claim against Air Baltic Corporation which settled for¬†‚ā¨57.4m. Other noted practitioners include senior associates Tomas Petkevińćius,¬†Valentas Mitrauskas¬†and¬†Mantas Juozaitis,¬†who specialises in tax disputes. TGS Baltic¬†handles a blend of international arbitration and litigation related to banking and investment disputes.¬†Vilius Bernatonis¬†is representing Vilnius City Municipality in an investor-state arbitration brought by Veolia Environnement; the case has been brought in parallel with a claim against the Republic of Lithuania by Veolia Environnement in which the firm is also representing the defendant. Solveiga Palevińćienńó¬†leads the team at¬†GLIMSTEDT Bernotas & Partners,¬†which handles a range of commercial and contractual disputes. In recent work, the team acted for Sanitex in a claim related to private investments in Serbia. Jonas Masiokas¬†is the key name for contentious IP and insurance matters. Senior associate Audrius ŇĹvybas¬†is also noted.

LEADELL BalńćiŇęnas & Grajauskas¬†represents clients across a wide range of industry sectors. Led by Gintaras BalńćiŇęnas¬†and Marius Grajauskas,¬†it is currently acting for Achema, the largest natural gas consumer in Lithuania, in multiple disputes with the state of Lithuania concerning a recently built liquefied natural gas terminal and the resulting levy that has been imposed on all natural gas consumers in the country. Senior associate Gintaras Stankevińćius¬†is recommended.

Magnusson's recent highlights include practice head Evaldas Rapolas¬†acting for the city of Kaunas‚Äô public health centre in a public-private partnership dispute;¬†the case is currently pending at the Supreme Court of Lithuania. Marius Endzinas¬†is representing¬†Ň†iauliai City Municipality in a dispute over a¬†concession agreement.¬†Marius Liatukas¬†is recommended for his expertise in white-collar crime cases.

Marius DevyŇĺis¬†and Robert Juodka¬†co-lead the practice group at Primus Derling,¬†which acted for¬†Ergo Insurance in a property insurance policy¬†dispute with Maxima Latvija, a food retail chain in the Baltics; the case, which concerned¬†the role of the store in the deaths of 54 people after the ceiling of the store collapsed in 2013, has now been settled for ‚ā¨5.34m. The 'proactive, responsive and commercially minded' Regina Derkintytńó-Kaupienńó¬†heads the team at¬†Averus,¬†which specialises in shipping and transport-related disputes. The firm is representing the Lithuanian Shipping Company in a claim for damages following the nullification of several mortgage agreements.¬†Practice co-head¬†Raimondas Kivylius¬†leads the criminal and administrative disputes sub-group and is recommended¬†for his expertise in contentious tax matters.¬†Vilius Vismantas¬†has departed the firm for an in-house position.

bnt attorneys in CEE's cross-border practice group is led by 'experienced' senior associate Rasa Grambaitńó-Pusńćienńó. The team, which provides ‚Äėpragmatic and thoughtful‚Äô advice, is representing a¬†major international pharmaceutical company in a dispute against a local pharmaceutical company concerning outstanding compensation payments. Frank Heemann¬†and Mindaugas Navickas¬†are the key contacts.

Dominas LEVIN's arbitration practice has a strong reputation and is led by the 'distinguished and sought-after' Gediminas Dominas. Recent work includes defending the CEO of a large listed company against a claim by a minority shareholder relating to alleged prohibited financial assistance. ECOVIS ProventusLaw's Kńôstutis Kvainauskas¬†has represented an individual who was sued by the Environmental Authority under the Ministry of Environment in a series of cases which are pending at the Supreme Court of Lithuania.¬†Inga Karulaitytńó-Kvainauskienńó¬†is also a key figure in the practice and is representing a client¬†in the renewable energy sector in a dispute over the validity of the termination of an agreement. Other clients include the Lithuanian Chamber of Auditors.

Law firm J. Judickiene and Partners Jurex's 20 lawyer-strong disputes team has particular expertise in shareholder and corporate disputes, with managing partner Jurgita Judickienńó¬†currently representing a client in a claim against a Lithuanian railroad carrier over a public procurement valued at¬†‚ā¨55m.¬†Ignas DarguŇĺas, who counts¬†French wine distributor Marie Brizard Wine and Spirits among his clients, is recommended. The CMB has now officially published the Communiqu√© on Crowdfunding No. III-35/A (‚Äú Communiqu√© ‚ÄĚ), on October 3, 2019. The Communiqu√© entered into force as of October 3, 2019.

    Cyprus has concluded the negotiations for the avoidance of double taxation with the Netherlands. The double tax treaty was agreed at technocratic level in Hague. It is expected to be signed by the end of 2019 or early in 2020.

    In the recent case of¬† ZA (Reg 9. EEA Regs; abuse of rights) Afghanistan ¬† [2019] UKUT 281 (IAC ), the Upper Tribunal found that there is no basis in EU law for the centre of life test, as set out in Regulation 9(3)(a) of the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2016 (the ‚ÄúRegulations‚ÄĚ). It further found that it is not to be applied when Judges assess ¬†Surinder Singh ¬†cases that appear before them.
