Cobalt¬†has ‚Äėdeep knowledge and specialisation‚Äô in a wide range of matters, including acquisitions, financial restructuring and recovery. Highlights included advising DNB on its cross-border merger with Nordea, and handling post-acquisition matters. Cross-jurisdictional work is not unusual for the firm as it continues to act for longstanding client Luminor on its merger, led by ńĘirts LejiŇÜŇ°¬†and counsel Andrejs Lielkalns. Lithuanian partner Irmantas Norkus¬†is also recommended.¬†Edgars Lodzins¬†has SEB Bank as a client.¬†Other clients include the European Investment Bank and HSBC.

Headline matters for Baltic powerhouse Ellex¬†included the team's advice to Blackstone on its acquisition of Luminor, which brought together a cross-border team including practice head Egons Pikelis;¬†Zinta Jansons, who leads the tax team; and Gediminas Reciunas, the former head of the finance group in Lithuania. The group is providing ongoing¬†assistance¬†to the private equity fund¬†with¬†its 60% stake in the bank.¬†Pikelis is also advising the European Investment Bank and the Nordic Investment Bank on the provision of ‚ā¨195m in parallel loans to a transport infrastructure modernisation project in Riga.¬†Valters Diure¬†is recommended for his expertise in insolvency matters.¬†Other clients include Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan.

Eversheds Sutherland BitńĀns¬†has a full-service banking practice, which covers capital markets, anti-money laundering, compliance and fintech. Practice co-heads MńĀris Vainovskis¬†and Mikus Freimanis¬†led advice to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on creating a new regulatory framework. New clients include SEB Bank and United Partners Group.

The ‚Äėsupreme abilities‚Äô displayed by Sorainen¬†allow it to excel in private equity, banking transactions,¬†finance and regulatory matters. Big-ticket matters included handling Nasdaq‚Äôs merger of its central security depositories across the Baltic states; the advice was led by practice head RŇędolfs EŇÜń£elis, who is noted for his ‚Äėsharp insight‚Äô. Engelis also assisted Nordea with its merger with DNB. Other longstanding clients include BaltCap and Amsterdam Trade Bank. Eva Berlaus¬†is also recommended.

TGS Baltic¬†‚Äėsurpasses its rivals in terms of quality and business insight‚Äô and acts for local and international corporations on all matters related to banking, including cross-border transactions, syndicated facility agreements, and capital markets and venture capital. Led by practice head Inese Hazenfusa¬†and senior associate Alise EljaŇ°ńĀne, the firm conducted a review of ExpoBank‚Äôs financial instruments.¬†Other matters included advising Jyske Bank on the issue of a¬†multimillion-euro loan to finance the conversion of a ship into a bitumen tanker.¬†The European Central Bank and the European Investment Bank are new clients.

BDO Law represented state-owned finance institution Altum in a complex dispute with two companies which were beneficiaries of aid granted by the client. The firm excels in handling contentious cases which involve alternative investment funds. Other clients include Corporate Finance Bonds. Managing partner Vita Liberte and Janis Zelmenis are key contacts.

Ramona Miglane leads the team at FORT, which recently provided the full scope of legal services to ExpressCredit, including drawing up documentation and agreements for the implementation of an online loan platform. Senior associate Edgars Turlajs was involved in cross-border work for leasing company Mogo, providing assistance with data protection and anti-money laundering procedures.

Kronbergs ńĆukste Levin¬†provides an 'excellent' service to its clients,¬†covering finance-related legal issues from loan agreements to project finance. Team head¬†Valters Kronbergs¬†acted as liquidator of a¬†bank and Vineta Cukste-Jurjeva¬†recently served as legal counsel for the European Central Bank before the European Commission in a cross-border matter which concerned the Bank of Latvia and the termination of its bank chief. Clients include¬†Johnson & Johnson and the¬†Ministry of Economics.

Primus Derling has wide experience across the banking and finance sector, especially in corporate restructuring and liquidation. Sintija Radionova and Kristine Gaigule co-head the practice, which recently advised clients on the recovery of funds from ABLV Bank and Rietumu Banka and provided assistance in relation to anti-money laundering. New clients include the Sapiens International Corporation. Dagnis Posums departed the firm to join Sorainen.

VILGERTS¬†has experience in handling transactions related to banking and finance matters, with Gints Vilgerts‚Äô expertise being concentrated in project finance. Recent work includes acting for¬†AutoKrAZ on reinstating its loans from the now-bankrupt¬†Ň™kio Bankas. The team continues¬†to represent the client in a claim against Deloitte Lithuania, which is now the auditor of Ň™kio Bankas. Senior associate and head of M&A¬†Vairis Dmitrijevs¬†is recommended. Clients include Air Baltic Corporation and BPM Capital.

Ilze Jankevińća, who made partner in 2018, leads the practice group at LEADELL Fogels, Vitols & Paipa, along with managing partner Karlis Vitols. The firm acts for private individuals and financial institutions, including longstanding client Swedbank. It handles cross-border work, which is strengthened by¬†its Baltic alliances in Estonia and Lithuania and global links in Asia.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal, Zverinatu advokatu birojs¬†has a multi-disciplinary approach to banking and finance matters,¬†acting for a wide range of public and private sector clients, including large financial institutions. Janis LagzdinŇ°¬†and senior associate Maris Butans¬†are recommended.

MńĀris Liguts¬†leads the team at ZAB Deloitte Legal, which handles the full spectrum of banking and finance work.
