Covering a broad range of investment fund and asset management-related work, Anderson Mori & Tomotsune has experience advising domestic and foreign investment funds and regularly assists with Japanese public and private placement issues. The team is particularly experienced in cross-border transactions and the distribution of offshore investment funds, including funds in the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg and Ireland, alongside a track record in handling real estate investment work. Practice co-head Harume Nakano has a particular speciality in real estate investment trusts, investment fund shares and units, as well as debt and equity securities. Co-head Kunihiko Morishita, who works primarily in domestic and international banking, securities and asset management, is a member of the Financial Law Board; he recently assisted with the integration of three funds for Superfund Japan.

Mori Hamada & Matsumoto regularly advises investment funds on public offerings and private placements in Japan and international jurisdictions including the Cayman Islands, Ireland and Luxembourg. Particularly known for advising on new non-Japanese funds that are publicly offered in Japan, the three-partner team was also selected as sole counsel for the Financial Services Agency responsible for reviewing the rules concerning foreign securities transactions. The group also assists with cutting-edge issues including fintech-related work. Co-head Yasuzo Takeno, has extensive experience in corporate finance advisory work and, financial regulation and regularly assists domestic and foreign investment managers, while co-head Ken Miura has advised on a number of high-profile deals including the introduction of US mutual funds in Japan for public offering. Recently the department was instructed on the public offering of Cayman Islands unit trusts, Wealth Core Portfolio and Global Core Equity Fund.

Atsumi & Sakai advises on a range of inbound and outbound investment fund issues for domestic and foreign investors, fund managers and affiliated companies investing in securities and real estate, and also has extensive experience assisting foreign funds with Japanese investments. The practice is co-led by Hiroki Mori, Eiichiro Hata and Ryuichi Nozaki; Nozaki advised the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF), the world’s largest government pension fund, on multiple structured fund investment transactions. The team is also representing several Japanese trust banks and an investment fund managed by one of Japan’s leading investment trust managers in a lawsuit claiming compensation for damages arising from misstatements in Toshiba's annual reports.

Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu provides advice concerning the structuring, distribution and sale of fund vehicles including domestic and foreign investment trusts, investment companies, REITs, private equity funds and real estate and infrastructure funds. The firm’s advice covers traditional investments as well as alternative investment schemes. Mami Ikebukuro is a notable name in the field.

Through its international network, TMI Associates acts for hedge funds and other fund managers on investment matters relating to private equity funds and the financing of construction and redevelopment projects. Yoshiyasu Yamaguchi leads an experienced team, which includes Kiyomi Kikuchi, whose practice encompasses a wide variety of finance transactions including banking and project finance issues, fund and investment management work, capital markets and derivatives mandates. Clients include banks, investment managers, pension funds, securities companies, and derivatives businesses; the group also acts as Japanese legal counsel to Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (JOIN), the first and only government-private sponsored fund in Japan, which specialises in investment in overseas infrastructure.
