Clifford Chance’s ‘available, responsive and professional team’ is highly rated for complex M&A transactions involving Italy, either for Italian corporations or foreign investors. Recent matters include advising ERGO Previdenza, an insurance company controlled by Gruppo Assicurativo Flavia, on the acquisition of Italian life insurance company Eurovita Assicurazioni. The team also assisted Poste Italiane (PI) with the creation of an alliance in the asset management sector with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and listed asset manager Anima Holding (AH); and in the context of the new alliance, it advised the consortium of PI, CDP and AH on the bid for the acquisition of Pioneer Global Asset Management. Shearman & Sterling LLP focuses mainly on private and public M&A, international joint ventures, and general corporate work. Domenico Fanuele heads the Italian corporate practice and Tobia Croff is also highly rated.

Simmons & Simmons is known for its experience in private equity deals as well as its sector expertise in real estate, asset management, financial institutions, TMT, life sciences and energy. Alongside the firm’s Beijing office, Dario Spinella, who ‘understands both commercial and legal needs’, advised a Chinese conglomerate on the acquisition of an 85% stake in an Italian luxury jewellery brand. White & Case (Europe) LLP is ‘very strong across jurisdictions’. The practice is recommended for cross-border M&A deals, including public M&A and private equity transactions.
