The EEA and competition team at Landslog – Law Offices successfully defended ISAVIA in a dispute over the allocation of airport slots at Keflavík International Airport, with advisory opinions being sought from the EFTA Court. The practice also has experience in merger control applications, including in relation to Hagar’s purchase of Oliuverzlun Islands. Jóhannes Karl Sveinsson is a key contact. He represented Gagnaveita Reykjavikur in state aid litigation and has also advised Reykjavík Energy and other governmental institutes in the same field.

Lex Law Offices’ team represents Mjólkursamsalan (MS Iceland Dairies) before the District Court of Reykjavík in alleged abuse of dominant position proceedings. It also advised Landsvirkjun on preparing and implementing a competition compliance program. Hulda Árnadóttir has ‘excellent knowledge of the field and very good English’ and is the sole head of the team following the departure of Heiðrún Lind Marteinsdóttir to Fisheries Iceland as CEO. Senior associate Maria Kristjansdottir is also well regarded.

The team at LOGOS is representing Síminn in a claim for damages from Fjarskipti for an alleged breach of competition law, as well as is in counter claims. Practice head and managing partner Helga Melkorka Óttarsdóttir, assisted by senior associate Halldór Brynjar Halldórsson, was instructed by Norvik and Byko in an appeal against a fine for an alleged cartel. The fine was successfully reduced from ISK650m to ISK65m and the team continues to advise on this reduction being challenged before the courts.

ADVEL Attorneys at Law’s competition practice is instructed by Fjarskipti in a claim for damages of ISK1bn arising from Síminn’s alleged breach of competition law. It is also defending Kaupfelag Skagfirdinga in a case concerning an alleged abuse of a dominant position in the dairy industry. Dóra Sif Tynes has returned to the practice after three years at the EFTA Surveillance Authority.

Juris is defending Borgun in a damage claim of more than ISK1bn for alleged abuse of a dominant position and collusion. Andri Árnason and Stefán A. Svensson represent Síminn in two matters objecting to the exemption from competition law which was granted to permit cooperation of telecoms operators. Clients also include Norviík, Já and Birgir Thór Bieltvedt.
