Prescription medicine

New rules are introduced in an attempt to curb the upward trend of young people trying to commit suicide with painkillers.

In recent years, an increasing number of young people have tried to commit suicide by poisoning themselves with painkillers. But it will now be more difficult for under-18s to buy painkillers.
With effect from 7 March 2011, painkillers will no longer be freely available on the high street, which means that under-18s will need to see their GP and have a prescription issued, which they can then bring along to the pharmacy where they can buy the painkillers.
In addition, retailers and other places where painkillers are sold over the counter will now be required to check that their customers are in fact 18 (or older).
The new rules will take effect simultaneously with new rules which will raise the legal age limit for buying alcohol. The age limit is now 18 years.
