Baker McKenzie’s ‘extremely responsive and knowledgeable’ TMT group is a ‘top choice for litigation and very complex cases’, with its clients quick to testify that the firm is ‘a reference in Argentina for IT and internet matters’. The firm’s comprehensive coverage of the sector spans both regulatory and transactional matters and it excels in corporate deals, technology licensing, procurement issues and privacy and data protection law – it also houses significant supplementary expertise in tax and advertising issues. Department head Guillermo Cervio is a ‘top-notch lawyer’ with ‘deep knowledge of internet matters – both from a legal and business perspective’; he recently advised a multinational technology company on the launch of a new digital platform. On the user side, the firm advised a global financial institution on the outsourcing of its administrative activities to a data processing company. On the contentious side, the firm is representing Iplan in several regulatory disputes concerning interconnections between fixed and mobile telecommunications networks. Over the past year Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal’s department, which is well weighted between technology, media and telecoms clients, acted on a steady stream of regulatory and transactional mandates, including licensing issues, privacy and data protection matters and corporate finance deals. Daniel Di Paola co-leads the practice and acted alongside the M&A and competition teams to advise Turner on its joint, five-year contract with Fox for the audio-visual rights (including TV) of Argentine football. In another key highlight, practice co-head Javier Etcheverry Boneo advised Cell Site Solutions on the development of telecoms infrastructure in Argentina. Emilio Beccar Varela, who focuses on TMT, IP and corporate matters, co-heads the practice alongside Florencia Rosati and together they advised Intelsat on obtaining landing rights to provide satellite facilities through its satellite IS-37e. Estudio O'Farrell’s TMT offering has a strong focus on regulatory matters under the leadership of high-profile economic regulation expert Agustín Siboldi. The group is particularly well known for its prominent telecoms practice and it is a popular choice for administrative litigation in the telecoms sphere. Recent mandates saw the team file an unconstitutionality action challenging a provincial law on behalf of Claro Argentina and Telmex Argentina. The group also advised Telefónica de Argentina and Movistar Argentina on amendments to the country’s media and telecoms law and the proposals for the new regulatory framework. Other key clients include Comunicaciones y Consumos, Nextel Communications Argentina and Personal Argentina.

Regulated industries specialist Sáenz Valiente & Asociados is a sophisticated boutique, which is highly sought after for its broad industry knowledge and administrative law expertise. The firm’s historical strength in press, communications and broadcasting law is particularly noted, but it also packs a punch in telecoms, e-commerce, and sports and entertainment matters. María Lucila Romero enjoys a strong market profile for transactional work and recently led the firm’s advice to Cablevisión Holdings, an affiliate of Grupo Clarín, on a $750m acquisition financing.

Bruchou, Fernández Madero & Lombardi’s ‘client-oriented’ practice demonstrates ‘excellent service delivery and industry knowledge’. Administrative and regulatory law lead Ignacio Sanz co-heads the department and provides ongoing advice to state-owned telecoms company Empresa Argentina de Soluciones Satelitales (ARSAT) on various matters, including recent advice on procurement proceedings. Other key names include senior associate Marcos Santiváñez Vieyra (‘an expert in the data privacy area’) and group co-lead Ignacio Minorini Lima.

Lescano & Etcheverry Abogados’ exclusive focus on ICT law issues ensures that it is well versed in a broad range of related areas, with strong skill-sets in telecoms, technology, broadcasting, e-commerce and e-media; the practice also houses robust complementary expertise in consumer law and antitrust issues. A popular choice for regulatory matters, the team additionally advises on incorporations, contractual arrangements, M&A and dispute resolution. Founding partners Esteban Lescano and Mariana Etcheverry are the names to note.

Pérez Alati, Grondona, Benites & Arntsen acted on several high-profile contentious cases involving the technology sector over the past year. Most notably, regulated industries specialist Mariano Grondona represented Google in a landmark case before the Supreme Court discussing internet service providers’ liability and the image-search legal framework. Other representative clients include Netflix, Telecom Argentina and YouTube. M&A lead Jorge Perez Alati is also active in the area.

New entrant Bulló Abogados houses an increasingly prominent multidisciplinary TMT practice, which routinely advises major corporations such as Terra Networks, Telefónica Argentina, IBM and Hewlett-Packard on license applications, participation in bidding rounds, contractual negotiations and contentious matters. Carlos Marín Rodríguez is the key contact.

Hope, Duggan & Silva’s team, which is led jointly by Gotardo Pedemonte and Hugo Vivot, is particularly strong on the advertising law side. It notably provides ongoing advice to TBWA Worldwide, TBWA Buenos Aires and TBWA Latin America on local law matters. Other key clients include DDB Worldwide, Interbrand Corporation and Ventures Producciones.

TMT is a key source of instructions at Estudio Ortiz & Asociados and the firm is particularly noted for its experience in transactional matters.
