The Legal 500 GC Powerlist India event took place at the Taj Mahal hotel Delhi on the 18th November 2016 and welcomed over 100 leading general counsel from all over India for a formal dinner and celebration.

The legal market in India is vibrant and reflects the wider commercial mood in the country of optimism about opportunity and growth potential. India is the third largest spending community in the world and has been called a bright spot of hope by the IMF. The general counsel honored on our list reflect that with the range of commitment, imagination and modernisation they bring to their roles.

The guests were welcomed by The Legal 500 Publishing Director for In House, Catherine McGregor followed by our keynote speakers, the Honorable Mr Justice AK Sikri, of the Supreme Court of India and Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Honorable Minister (Law & Justice, Electronics & IT).

Both speakers pointed to the fact that India is in the midst of great development. The legal sector is key to helping India achieve its economic and commercial potential. Both Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad and honorable Mr Justice Sikri acknowledged the achievement of all the honorees in the GC Powerlist in being selected as outstanding in-house counsel.

We were also delighted to be in the presence of former attorney general of India the honorable Mr Soli Sorabjee, whose role in defending freedom of expression and the protection of human rights meant he was greeted with much affection by our audience. Also making an appearance at the event was Princess Shanaz Hussein CEO of Shanaz Herbals and one of India’s most successful businesswomen.

The evening was a spirited celebration and guests welcomed the chance to socialise with their peers. The general counsel in attendance deemed it: 'A fantastic event with exceptional speakers.'
