What has been your greatest achievement, in a professional and personal capability?
I like what I do. You can't really be successful if you don't like what you do.
What do you do differently from your peers in the industry?
I like to think that we at Fenwick work harder, are more current in the law and the marketplace, and are more creative and practical as necessary to suit our clients' needs. These may sound like platitudes but our clients seem to like what we're doing.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Keep doing what you're doing. Don't change a thing, and always remember the answers to questions one and two above. You can't be successful if you don't work hard.
Can you give me a practical example of how you helped a client add value to the business?
There are so many examples that it's difficult to single out any one thing.
Within your sector, what do you think will be the biggest challenge for clients over the next 12 months?
BEPS, the US's 482 arm's-length rules, the activist European Comission's making its own rules, US tax treaties, the BEPS multilateral instrument, and the developing-countries' quandary as to what rules to follow. Putting it all together. Making sense out of it. What have the BEPS people and the EC wrought?
