The firm: Edwards Duthie represents the merger of two firms of long standing in the East London & West Essex areas. These were Edwards son & Noice and Duthie Hart and Duthie. These two firms had been practising for approximately 100 years when, in 2000, they merged to form the firm of Edwards Duthie. Our longevity is testimony to our ability to understand and adapt to change, whether this be within the legal system or more generally to meet the needs of our clients.

The pre-merger legacy of both firms still pervades the philosophy of Edwards Duthie to the present day. Our ambition is the achievement of high standards delivered in a cost effective way. We have an expertise comparable to a major City firm, close to London but at a much lower cost to our clients. We are also able to provide a comprehensive one-stop service to clients. There are few legal problems that we do not know how to deal with.

We are probably the largest firm in the East London/Essex area with a total staff compliment of over 100. We are spread across the East London/Essex area with a number of offices close to major transport routes.

Edwards Duthie has a reputation for integrity and expertise. This has been built upon success in dealing with complex and often high profile cases, across a range of disciplines. The firm has a range of expertise with lawyers whom are specialist in areas such as Crime, Commercial Work, Civil Litigation, Employment, Family, Child Care, Housing, Personal Injury, private client Wills and Probate. We have a very wide and divers client base. This includes individuals who may rely on legal aid, high net worth individuals through to institutional clients, large PLC's, insurers and trade unions. Edwards Duthie also has experience of working for Local Authorities and public authorities.

Types of work undertaken: Edwards Duthie are unique in the range and diversity of legal services we can provide to clients. We have a reputation for delivering high quality work in a number of different areas of law. These include:

Commercial Property: We act for a large range of clients from individual investors and landlords through to some of the largest commercial landlords in the UK, including some with overseas connections.

Criminal litigation: We have a reputation for expertise across a wide range of the criminal law with specialist lawyers who regularly practice in the Courts at all levels. This is not just as litigators but also as advocates. We have a number of Higher Court's Advocates who practice in the Crown Court and Court of Appeal, providing a cost effective one stop service to clients.

Civil Litigation: Our client base includes individuals as well as corporate clients and our lawyers are experts in dealing with matters such as professional negligence, property disputes, landlord and tenant disputes, probate disputes and also actions against the police.

Employment: We are able to meet the needs of both employees and employers with a keen understanding of the needs of both.

Family & Divorce: Our specialist lawyers are able to deal with all aspects of family and matrimonial work. This includes not only issues relating to separation and divorce, both for married and unmarried persons, but also within civil partnerships and financial settlements arising out of the dissolution of such relationships. We can also assist with prenuptial contracts and issues relating to surrogacy.

Childcare Law: We have a number of lawyers with specialist expertise in the complex and difficult area of Childcare Law, acting for parents and children. All of these Lawyers have proven expertise through their membership with the Children Panel.

Regulatory & Professional Discipline: We have an established reputation for representing medical professionals in regulatory matters before the General Medical Council, the General Dental Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Council and also Local Health Authorities.

Personal Injury: We have expertise and experience in dealing with a range of cases, from minor claims of damages through to the most complex. We regularly receive instructions from a National Trade Union.

Clinical Negligence: A complex area of litigation for clients with often devastating injuries and complicated needs. We have an established team of experienced fee earners able to deal with these cases.

Housing: Throughout the London area, we have demonstrated our ability to deal with a wide range of housing disputes including possession proceedings, disrepair proceedings, unlawful eviction, homelessness cases and, cases concerning the allocation of social housing. Our housing lawyers are recognised as experts in their field with many reported cases in the appeal Courts including leading cases on homelessness and allocations. Our housing team also holds contracts with the Legal Aid Agency to provide duty advice in the County Courts at Bow, Edmonton and Romford.

Wills and Probate: Our longevity has provided the opportunity to provide for the needs of our clients across the generations, securing for them the best that can be achieved in issues of inheritance, tax and estate planning.

Edwards Duthie is accredited by the Legal Aid Agency and recognised to be an effective deliverer of legal services by the Agency, in a number of areas of law. This provides objective confirmation that we achieve the high aspirations that we set for ourselves. This success in achieving and maintaining high standards is replicated in other areas involving private client and commercial work.
