This Manchester set provides services of the highest quality in a wide range of matters, including personal injury and clinical negligence, business and property work, employment, family law and crime. It provides specialist road transport expertise.

The set: Chambers was established in 1973 by a small group of forward-thinking Manchester barristers. Through sustained expansion it has developed into a select set of 80 exceptional practitioners, all of whom are committed to Chambers' original ethos of excellence in practice.

The set prides itself on an objective and personal approach, providing clear advice of the best quality. Many of its members have appeared at the highest level with cases being reported in law reports and in the media. Some have been called upon to appear in the European Court of Justice as well as in courts in foreign jurisdictions.

Key objectives are to provide the highest quality of advocacy, advice and drafting together with a personal and approachable manner. The set's superior levels of service have led to the award of Quality Mark, the Community Legal Services' mark of excellence.

The set provides seminars to keep clients updated with latest legal developments in a range of topics, including clinical negligence, noise-induced hearing loss, industrial disease, and general civil and personal injury, as well as family and other matters.

Types of work undertaken: The civil and personal injury department covers practice areas including all types of injury, industrial disease, professional negligence and housing issues. Clinical negligence has been a specialism since the 1980s and the set covers a wide range of cases, including many maximum-severity cases. Several cerebral palsy cases are concluded each year. Spinal, orthopaedic, gynaecological, wrongful birth, vascular surgery, amputations, dental and many other subjects are frequently dealt with. Inquests are conducted. Members regularly appear in cases of high-value and complexity, which contribute to the development of the law in their field, while providing outstanding advice and advocacy at all levels of seniority. Advice is offered from the earliest stages of litigation through to its conclusion. A large proportion of cases reach settlement. For the few that do not, members are routinely retained to conduct interlocutory hearings, trials, damages assessments and costs hearings.

The business and property department deals with a broad range of disputes in the diverse fields of business, property, trusts and probate. Particular specialities include banking, bankruptcy and insolvency, commercial arbitrations, commercial fraud (civil), commercial and residential landlord and tenant, company, consumer credit and contract. Advice is also provided in directors' disqualification; equitable remedies; entertainment law; financial services; franchising; guarantees; insurance; patents, designs, copyright and trademarks; mortgages; probate, the administration of estates and family provision; product liability; sale of goods and trusts, settlements and wills. Several members of the department are on the attorney general's provincial panel and are regularly instructed by HMRC.
