Position

Chris specialises in all areas of intellectual property. His science and IT background gives him an edge in patent and technology actions, and he has a burgeoning practice in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC), particularly in trade marks and designs. Chris also advises on commercial disputes with an IP angle.

Chris frequently appears in the High Court as sole counsel and as a junior, and is regularly on his feet in the IPEC and in the Intellectual Property Office. He has also appeared as sole counsel before the General Court and as a junior in the Court of Appeal.

Chris’s patent practice has covered utility meters (Meter-Tech Llc & Anor v British Gas Trading Ltd [2016] EWHC 2278), a number of high-value mobile phone patent cases (including Microsoft v Motorola [2012] EWHC 3677 (Pat)), mechanical patents (a wet blasting method – Farrow Holdings [2014] EWHC 2047 (Pat), display panels – OOO Abbott v Design & Display [2014] EWHC 3234 (IPEC), and airline seats – Virgin v Delta [2012] EWHC 3318 (Pat)), and pharmaceuticals (Omnipharm v Merial [2011] EWHC 3393 (Pat)).

Chris recently appeared in a two-day copyright trial in the IPEC (Bodo Sperlein v Sabichi [2015] EWHC 1242 (IPEC)), and has considerable experience in software copyright (3i v RBS [unreported]).

Recent trade mark and passing off cases include experience as sole counsel in the General Court (Iglotex T- 282/13) and in IPEC (MB Garden Buildings v Mark Burton Construction [2014] EWHC 431), and as junior counsel with Richard Hacon (as he then was) in the Court of Appeal – Lumos Skincare v Sweet Squared [2013] EWCA Civ 671) and with Henry Carr QC in the IPO (Carnival plc v Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines (O-048-15)).

Chris recently secured summary judgment in a clothing design action (Dalco International v First Dimension [2015] EWHC 760 (IPEC)) and has acted in a three-day trial concerning caravan covers (Pro-Tec v Specialised Covers [2011] EWPCC 23).

Chris also has substantial experience in accounts of profits (Bodo Sperlein v Sabichi [2015] EWHC 1242 (IPEC)) and OOO Abbott v Design & Display [2014] EWHC 3234 (IPEC)).
