1 Chancery Lane’s Andrew Warnock QC represented the force in Supreme Court case James-Bowen v Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis, which concerned whether an employer owes a duty of care to defend litigation according not only to his own interests, but the interests of his employees; the facts concern the 2003 arrest of Babar Ahmad – better known for spending eight years in prison while fighting extradition to the UK – which the force accepted was carried out with ‘serious unjustified violence’.
