Position

Michael has an exclusive practice both defending in high profile, serious and complex crime, and in other areas of quasi-criminal work, including disciplinary tribunals and hearings, where his advocacy skills can be fully utilised. He recently concluded a four-month long Article 2 Inquest. He is instructed to review and advise on appellate work and to conduct cases in the Court of Appeal. He has developed a reputation for his ability in cases requiring the examination and testing of experts’ evidence. He has defended in numerous well-publicised trials involving murder, money laundering, drugs and hijacking. Michael’s expertise in fraud includes banking fraud, duty evasion, mortgage fraud, land banking fraud, and money laundering. He has defended in prosecutions brought by the SFO and the FCA; recently acting for a Solicitor charged with aiding and abetting the operation of an unregulated collective investment scheme. He has represented and advised company directors and others alleged to be involved in fraud on Banks, and acted in a nationwide multi million pound “Vishing” fraud. He has recently acted in a high profile computer hacking case, acting for the former CEO of an International Company

Three Raymond Buildings has relationships with both prosecuting authorities and blue-chip criminal and commercial firms, handling work at the interface between traditional criminal fraud and business crime. Michael Borrelli QC represented a defendant in a phishing fraud trial concerning losses of £160m to various corporate institutions, while Helen Malcolm QC represented the solicitor who was convicted in Operation Amazon. Among the junior ranks, Luke Ponte prosecuted as sole counsel the owners of a café, who were convicted of VAT fraud and received custodial sentences.
