Commerical, matrimonial finance, public law.
Position
Mary’s commercial practice has particular emphasis on claims relating to factoring agreements, guarantees and indemnities. Her clients include banks and financial institutions. She specialises in personal and corporate insolvency, and appears for IPs, creditors and debtors. Her public law practice is primarily immigration and human rights based. She provides advice and advocacy in all aspects of immigration and asylum. Her clients range from unaccompanied minors to the so-called Russian oligarchs. In her recent case MB Zimbabwe [2008], Mary successfully represented a minor from Zimbabwe in an appeal to the Court of Appeal alleging a violation of his right to family life based on his long residence in the UK, and the interpretation of a Home Office policy applicable to minors with seven years’ residence. In AP (Roma) Croatia [2004] UKIAT00269 AP (Croatia), Mary represented a Croatian national of Roma ethnicity in an appeal concerning the discrimination suffered by Roma in Croatia, and the failure of the State to sufficiently protect the Roma population from race attacks. Mary worked as part of a team for almost a year drafting two very complex asylum applications. The claims involved related asylum applications by third parties, extradition and mutual legal assistance requests in Switzerland and Cyprus. Mary has been involved in drafting applications pending to the European Court of Human Rights alleging violations of Articles 5,6 and 8.
