Acknowledged as one of the finest Chancery sets – containing many outstanding individuals – Ten Old Square has an excellent reputation for both traditional and commercial Chancery work.
The set: There is a wealth of talent among the barristers who practice at chambers. Ten Old Square handles a wide range of cases, from major litigation in the High Court and appellate courts and proceedings in offshore jurisdictions to disputes in the county courts and numerous other tribunals. It also boasts some highly skilled legal draftsmen.
Many of the barristers have highly specialised practices and are the authors or editors of some of the principal textbooks on Chancery law. All the barristers are members of the Chancery Bar Association and many also belong to STEP, ACTAPS, APP and the Property Bar Association. Ten Old Square is LawNet’s approved chambers for its elderly and wills group.
The senior clerk is Keith Plowman, who has 29 years’ experience as a clerk. His deputy, Marc Schofield, is equally qualified and both have won praise for their professional yet refreshingly candid approach to their work.
Types of work undertaken: Four principal areas of law are undertaken:
Private client (including trusts, the administration of estates, tax, charities, probate, wills, intestacy, family provision and matrimonial finance).
Property (including landlord and tenant, rent review, 1954 Act renewals, conveyancing, commercial property and leasehold enfranchisement. Easements, restrictive covenants, mortgages, subrogation and manorial rights are also covered).
Commercial Chancery (including banking, consumer credit, company, insolvency, receivership, contractual disputes, the recovery and freezing of domestic and international assets, and professional negligence relating to surveyors, accountants, solicitors and other professionals).
Partnership (including dissolution, expulsions, compulsory retirement, LLPs, MDPs, restrictive covenants and partnership accounts, as well as non-contentious drafting and advice).
In addition to these main areas of practice, Ten Old Square also has extensive expertise available in all the general Chancery disciplines. Moreover, mediations and arbitrations and other forms of dispute resolution are covered, with some members qualified to act as mediators. The barristers can also be made available to give talks at seminars and chambers is accredited by the SRA to provide CPD points. The website www.tenoldsquare.com has been developed to provide comprehensive information about the set.
