Specialist criminal defence and sports law barrister. Experienced in matters involving homicide, serious violence, fraud and drug trafficking (including complex confiscation proceedings). Specialist expertise in all aspects of regulatory work including sports law, environmental law, health and safety regulation, medicines, consumer protection, firearms and insurance. Niche practice in all aspects of licensing law, including liquor, public entertainment, betting and gaming at first instance and on appeal. All aspects of the civil jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ and Crown Courts including firearms regulation and licensing, anti-social behaviour orders, sex offender orders, football banning orders and seizure orders. Notable cases include, sports law: the ‘It’s a man’s world’ inquiry- acted for the first two defendants in the biggest ever corruption enquiry conducted by the British Horseracing Authority involving multiple allegations of race fixing; British Judo Association v Alan Roberts, one of the UK’s most respected coaches accused of historic sexual offences against students. Pursued by the BJA notwithstanding the CPS decision not to prosecute. Homicide: R v Terry Carlos (Leicester Crown Court), lead defendant in a drug related murder case involving a cut throat defence; R v Usman Ahmed and Robual Islam, appeared for two of the six defendants accused of the murder of an unintended victim during a conspiracy to commit GBH; Rv O.R., teenager accused of murder during the course of violent disorder; R v Dwight Splatt, successful defence of an 18 year old accused of attempted murder involving multiple stab wounds; R v Hoang Thanh, attempted murder captured on CCTV arising out of an argument within the Vietnamese community; R v K.F., 14 year old accused of a ‘one-punch’ manslaughter; R v Branco Loncar, successful defence of a request from the Republic of Croatia for the return of the defendant, an ethnic Serb, to face re-trial following his acquittal (under Yugoslav law) of the murder of his wife.
