Fraud, Corporate Crime and Financial Services Regulation: Gillian is regularly instructed to both defend and prosecute in serious and complex fraud. She has a wealth of experience, having been instructed in cases involving the alleged manipulation of LIBOR, insider dealing and FSMA offences to frauds involving bogus shares and carbon credits, tax/VAT, charitable & educational trusts, commercial property, ratings, MTIC/Carousel and alcohol diversion . Her skill set is ideally suited to the preparation and presentation of such cases. With a reputation for meticulous preparation, mastery of her material, a keen mind and the ability to work well both leading and as part of team, Gillian is a sought after advocate. With a proven track record, Gillian receives instructions to act on behalf of the FCA in respect of offences arising out of the regulation of the financial services sector such as insider dealing and FSMA offences. Currently, Gillian is instructed as prosecution junior, in the SFO’s investigation into the alleged widespread and large scale manipulation of the London Interbank Offered Rate (“LIBOR”). An investigation which ranges over a number of banks, inter-dealer brokers and jurisdictions. Gillian also acts in an advisory capacity to City law firms in respect of their money laundering obligations, compliance procedures and corporate governance. Medicines and Healthcare Product Regulatory Authority Gillian has developed a specialism in the prosecution on behalf of the MHRA of beaches of the regime for the regulation of the supply and movement of medicines for human use .She was instructed in the first prosecution brought by the MHRA in respect of counterfeit life saving medicines (e.g. cancer drugs), that were introduced into the supply chain in the UK, which reached pharmacies and patient levels. She currently holds instructions to advise in respect of an investigation into alleged breaches of the Medicines Regime in respect of the parallel importation of pharmaceuticals. Health and Safety Misconduct in Public Office Gillian has represented a number of public officials charged with misconduct in public office. The cases often involve concurrent internal/disciplinary investigations and complex issues as to disclosure. Sexual Offences Gillian is regularly instructed to defend in cases involving Rape and serious sexual offences. She is experienced in the specialised area of advocacy involving the cross-examination of the very young and vulnerable, as well as those who have learning disabilities, or suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome. Gillian has argued both for and against the use of intermediaries in cases involving witnesses with learning disabilities and mental health problems. A number of the cases in which she has been instructed have involved the conducting of cross-examination through an intermediary. Gillian is currently a member of the working group developing "Advocacy Training for Sexual Offences and Vulnerable Witnesses/Defendants" in conjunction with Bar Council, Law Society and CPS to be implemented by the Judicial College. Gillian is also a chapter contributor to Rook & Ward: 'Sexual Offences, Law & Practice', Sweet & Maxwell Organised Crime Gillian has over the years developed extensive experience in defending in multi-handed organised crime cases, often appearing for the defendant as a Leading Junior. She is also on the CPS specialist panel for Organised Crime. Homicide Gillian has gained a wealth of experience as junior defence counsel in cases of homicide, particularly those involving complex medical and scientific evidence.
