Position

Riel is a leading criminal practitioner with a strong prosecution practice who also defends in cases of all levels of complexity and seriousness. Before coming to the Bar she trained and worked as a theatre director, which has undoubtedly informed her understanding of the psychology of witnesses and defendants, and assisted in making her a particularly jury friendly advocate. She has been described by some of those who instruct her as a “brilliant communicator”, who is “personable, professional and polite”, with a “persuasive and calm approach that is very beneficial in front of a jury”, and more than once by judges as “a class act”. Riel has experience of the complete calendar of criminal offences, but particularly specialises in serious and organised crime. She has many years’ experience of homicide cases, including both high-profile and historic prosecutions, and has appeared at as leading counsel, alone, and as junior counsel in a number of multi-handed trials, including high profile terrorist cases. She is considered a specialist in Human Trafficking cases, having prosecuted a number of these difficult trials successfully. She has extensive experience of serious sexual offences, including those involving allegations of historic sexual abuse and rape, violent stranger rape, rape of a prostitute, and cases involving children, both as victims and accused. Riel is considered to be particularly good with vulnerable victims, having the ability to put them at ease and so draw the best evidence from them. Riel has advised for the defence in a number of private cases, and also provides occasional pro bono advice to Amnesty International.
