Work Department
Family and Court of Protection.
Position
Family – children: William’s extensive public law Children Act practice regularly sees him litigating the most serious cases in the County and the High Court. He has developed a particular expertise in cases involving very serious injury and difficult medical evidence (having appeared for the successful local authority in the landmark shaken baby syndrome case before the then President, Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss – Re A & D). He has regularly appeared in cases involving allegations of factitious injury syndrome, of serious, sometimes serial, sexual abuse, and in cases with a complicated international element. In 2010 he appeared, led, for an applicant seeking to relitigate findings of serious sexual abuse made against him a decade earlier; after a five-week High Court retrial the findings were not made. He acts in the more difficult private law disputes. Court of Protection: he has a busy and growing practice in cases proceeding under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and is the head of chambers’ Court of Protection team. He frequently appears in cases in the Court of Protection involving the deprivation of liberty of adults lacking capacity, including, for example, a landmark case involving an adult suffering with prader-willi syndrome. Finance and divorce: he has a wide experience of ancillary relief and other financial cases. Judicial review: he advises and acts in prospective or actual judicial review cases arising out of cases and decisions made within the family law and mental capacity law arenas.
