Charles Debattista practises dry shipping law and international trade, appearing both in Court and in arbitrations in the UK and abroad.  He has also sat as an Arbitrator in more than 200 arbitrations under LMAA, ICC, LCIA, SCMA terms or ad hoc since 2002, both in this country and abroad. Widely published and cited, he has been closely associated with many of the main instruments used in shipping and trade law, spanning from COGSA 1992 to Incoterms 2020.


Charles joined Stone Chambers in October 2004 as an associate member and arbitrator, and then in 2013 as a Full Member.  Stone Chambers joined the 36 Group as 36 Stone in 2018, with Charles now being Head of 36 Stone.  Qualified as an Advocate in Malta (1978), Charles is a Registered European Lawyer with the Bar of England and Wales.  In an earlier life, Charles was academic at the University of Southampton, where he was Professor of Commercial Law until 2011 and Director of the Institute of Maritime Law there for many years.

Its members have extensive experience in matters relating to shipping and commodities contracts in the civil and criminal courts, arbitrations, inquiries and other tribunals in the UK and overseas. It has highly regarded specialists including international trade and commodities specialist Vasanti Selvaratnam QC, who acted for a respondent Malaysian Bank in Deutsche Bank AG v CIMB Bank Berhad, which concerned discrepancies in documents in a commodity transaction.
