Position

Guy Roots QC specialises in town and country planning, environment, compulsory purchase and compensation, rating and valuation, other local government and administrative law subjects. He advises a wide spectrum of clients including companies, local authorities, government and other agencies and individuals.  Examples of major schemes in which he acted for the promoter include: London Olympic Games 2012; regeneration of Greenwich peninsula; decommissioning of Trawsfyndd Nuclear Power Station; Terminal 5 at Heathrow; new electricity transmission lines for National Grid and EDF.  He is one of the leading experts on compulsory purchase and other categories of statutory compensation, rating and land valuation.  He has appeared in many compensation cases in the Lands Tribunal and Upper Tribunal.  He has also appeared in the Lands Tribunal and Court of Appeal in Hong Kong, in the Grand Court and Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands, a Board of Assessment in the British Virgin Islands and the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal.

Called 1969; Middle Temple; Harmsworth scholar; took silk 1989; Bencher, Middle Temple. Publications of note: general editor ‘Ryde on Rating and the Council Tax’ and general editor ‘Compulsory Purchase and Compensation Service’, published by Bloomsbury Professional.

Past chairman of the Planning and Environment Bar Association (PEBA) (2000-2004).  Member of Compulsory Purchase Association and the National Infrastructure Planning Association.  Member of the DETR's Compulsory Purchase Policy Review Advisory Group.  Assistant Boundary Commissioner.
