Position

Zeenat is currently instructed as junior counsel to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. Her practice encompasses all areas of criminal defence and she has a growing practice in public law. She has a particular interest and expertise in public international law, human rights and social justice issues. Zeenat is particularly passionate about representing the most vulnerable individuals and working with marginalised communities.

 

Alongside her courtroom practice, Zeenat is heavily involved in pioneering projects working to widen access and improve diversity in the legal profession; specifically in raising the profile of Muslim women. Additionally, she is the Founder & Director of YOU*th Inspire; an award winning educational initiative seeks to nurture a voice of change in young people through creative engagement with law, human rights and politics.

 

She was a finalist in the UK Legal Diversity Awards 2017 and a nominee for Rising Star in the 2016 Society of Asian Lawyers Awards

Career

Zeenat was called to the Bar in 2013. Throughout her time in chambers, she has completed a Pegasus Fellowship at the Centre for Constitutional Rights in New York where she worked on Guantanamo Bay litigation. Additionally, she has spent time in The Hague developing her expertise in ‘lawyering for the public interest’ and was selected as a participant for the SEC’s criminal advocacy programme in Florida.

 

Prior to joining Chambers, Zeenat was a research associate for the Warwick Centre for Human Rights and conducted work for the EU Fundamental Rights Agency and worked on projects covering international criminal justice, Islamic law and refugee protection in the Middle East. She also worked as a seminar tutor for Warwick Law School. She has supported and worked with a number of charities and grassroots organisations including Restless Beings and MOSAIC.
