Position

Homicide specialist with acknowledged expertise in cases involving complex pathology. Has established himself as one of the country’s leading prosecutors in the field of child homicide, having successfully prosecuted a succession of high profile cases including the murder of Daniel Pelka, described by the Vice-President of the Queen’s Bench Division as “one of the most serious offences of murder to come before the courts”. Has been invited to address the British Association in Forensic Medicine, the British Society of Paediatric Radiologists and the National Police Chiefs’ Council on medico-legal issues arising in child homicide cases.

Also recognised as a leader in the field of child sexual abuse and is one of a small number of specialist Queen’s Counsel nationwide whom the CPS instructs to prosecute the gravest and most complex of such cases. Instructed to prosecute Operation Satchel, the largest child sexual abuse case West Midlands CPS has ever conducted.

As well as appearing in court he advises on law and strategy, both pre-charge and at an early stage after criminal proceedings have commenced. Typically, such advisory work concerns cases where clinical and/or pathological evidence is particularly complex, for example allegations of so-called ‘baby-shaking’ and other forms of child homicide, including manslaughter by gross negligence.

Sought after by leading defence firms to defend in the most challenging and high-profile cases. Recent instructions include the defence of Aaron Barley, charged with the murders of Tracey Wilkinson and her son, and the attempted murder of her husband, at their home in Stourbridge.
