lain Morley has practiced in all aspects of domestic criminal law, and since 2005 has become a well-known figure on the international circuit, practicing in genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and international terrorism. He has appeared and taught in 18 jurisdictions.

His early domestic career led to media attention in 2001, when defending Claire Marsh, at then 18 the youngest woman yet prosecuted for rape, and Roy Whiting, accused of the notorious paedophile murder of Sarah Payne, aged 7. In March 2005 he was appointed Trial Counsel to the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to assist in Arusha, Tanzania, the prosecution of four cases concerning six key figures in the 1994 Rwanda genocide: one concerning a singer named Bikindi whose songs were said to incite the killing of the minority Tutsi tribe; a second concerning the Minister of Education, Rwamakuba, being allegedly actively involved in killings; the third, Zigiranyirazo, being the brother-in-law of the late president, alleged to have encouraged the genocide; and the fourth, Karemera, Ngirumpatse and Nzirorera, concerning the three principal leaders of the then dominant MRND political party said to be responsible for creating and unleashing the murderous Interahamwe which was the principal civilian militia which killed very many of nearly one million Tutsi civilians. He took Silk in 2009, and then in April he was appointed Senior Trial Counsel at the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) in The Hague, just as the tribunal opened, where he then marshalled the evidence, and wrote the indictment, confirmed in June 2011, against the assassins in 2005 of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. In February 2012, the Judges decided that the trial will be in absentia, with no defendants arrested, and so Morley has returned to domestic practice from January 2013, in which year he has prosecuted in murder and defended in fraud and in drugs conspiracies. Advocacy training: in addition, lain Morley is an established advocacy teacher, nationally and internationally, and is the author of The DevU’s Advocate – how to be seriously good in court, currently a best-selling book on advocacy skills in the UK and worldwide.
