Position

Barrister specialising in commercial litigation with an emphasis on banking, financial services, commercial fraud and contentious regulatory work. He is consistently recommended in the legal directories in these fields, where is has been described, variously, as 'junior of choice', and 'an impressive all-rounder who turns his hand to very complex new matters with ease'; he 'receives consistent applause from the market', 'draws plaudits for his sound judgment and lateral thinking' and is 'known for his prodigious work ethic'. He has a growing reputation in banking and financial services, in which field he is recommended by the Legal 500 and is listed in 'UK Legal Experts'. He has particular experience of the obligations on financial institutions under Part 7 POCA 2002 and was junior counsel for the bank in Shah v HSBC Private Bank Ltd (2010) 3 All ER 477. He acts for the FSA as well as for regulated firms and individuals and has particular experience of market abuse and mis-selling. He was instructed for the defendant in the first market abuse case to be brought by the FSA in the Chancery Division under s129 FSMA. His experience of commercial fraud is wide ranging and, exceptionally, encompasses both civil and criminal fraud (in which area he is ranked as a leading junior by 'Chambers and Partners' and 'The Legal 500'). He is on the SFO list of approved counsel and the Attorney General's Panel of Prosecuting Advocates acting for the government in major frauds, tax evasion and serious regulatory matters. He was junior counsel for the Serious Fraud Office in the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords in GG Plc [2009] 1 WLR 458 (the high profile prosecution of manufacturers of generic drugs for price fixing). In addition to his practice in financial services regulation, he is well known for his regulatory work in health, safety and the environment, in which area he is ranked by 'Chambers and Partners' and 'The Legal 500'. He has acted in some of the most complex and high profile cases, including the Potters Bar rail crash and the litigation arising from the explosion at the Buncefield oil storage terminal.
