Stephen Houseman has a diverse practice covering general domestic and multi-jurisdictional commercial disputes, re/insurance, banking and finance, sports and media/entertainment, as well as being Junior Counsel to the Crown (B Panel) in public/administrative law matters. He regularly appears in international arbitrations and works with US and other foreign attorneys in large-scale commercial disputes. He has appeared in the Grand Court and Court of Appeal in the Cayman Islands and also has extensive experience of mediation and ADR procedures. Some of Stephen’s recent cases include: Concord Trust v. Law Debenture [2005] 1 WLR 1591 (House of Lords – acting on behalf of bondholders in a dispute relating to acceleration of a €510m bond issue; and related subsequent decisions concerning arbitration/litigation provisions in the bond trust deed and whether relevant ‘events of default’ had occurred); Forrest v. Glasser [2006] 2 Lloyd’s Rep 392 (Court of Appeal – proper interpretation of time-bar provisions in share subscription/acquisition agreements); Coromin v. Axa Re & ors [2007] EWHC 2818 (Comm) (successful claim by captive insurer of Anglo American for physical damage and business interruption losses in Chile); and acting on behalf of claimants seeking anti-suit injunctions to prevent foreign challenges to arbitral awards made in England under ‘Bermuda Form’ wording in both Noble v Gerling [2007] Lloyd’s Rep IR 33 and C v. D [2008] 1 Lloyd’s Rep 239 (Court of Appeal). Stephen has in recent years been instructed on behalf of ‘The Beach Boys’ (in a dispute concerning stolen memorabilia); The FA & FIFA (in a dispute involving a football players’ agent); and The FA Premier League (in High Court proceedings during 2007 arising out of the West Ham/Tevez/Macherano disciplinary decision).
Position
Stephen Houseman has a broad court-based practice involving all aspects of civil procedure and commercial law with an emphasis on work in the Commercial Court. He also regularly appears in domestic and international arbitrations. His experience includes working as co-counsel with US attorneys in major multi-national disputes. He has appeared in the Grand Court and Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands. He was a lecturer in public and administrative law at Hertford College, Oxford from 1995-2000.
