Nick is a partner in the TMT team specialising in IF dispute resolution and has over 25 years of experience advising clients within the music, furniture, design, fashion, newspaper, book publishing, and pharmaceutical sectors. Nick is regularly instructed from all over the world to advise on the full spectrum of IP issues. In addition, he is a regular contributor to IF journals, books and a frequent speaker on IF issues at seminars and webinars. Nick is considered as a trusted adviser by his clients and as an extension to their in house capability. In 1998 Nick helped set up the cross industry Alliance against Intellectual Property Theft (now known as the Alliance for Intellectual Property) and was its Vice Chairman for a number of years. He has also sat on the UK Government IP Crime Group and was Secretary of the Joint Action Group between industry and the Association of Chief Police Officers to address IF Crime. Nick drafted the legislation that was implemented in law as the Copyright and Trade Mark (Offences and Enforcement) Act 2002, and has for many years lobbied all over Europe on behalf of many industries for changes to copyright, trade mark and designs laws. He has helped draft recent Government legislation in the shape of the IF Act which, inter alia, has criminalised the infringement of registered designs. In recognition of his contribution to the design industries, Nick was in February 2013 elected as a Freeman of the Worshipful Guild of Furniture Makers. Nick’s national reputation has been recognised across other sectors, with many senior appointments. He is currently a Board Director of the Federation against Software Theft (FAST), Chief Legal Counsel to Anti-Copying OIN Design (ACID), and its representative at the legal group meetings of the Alliance for IF. Nick is also a former director of the Anti-Counterfeiting Group, a former Chair of its enforcement subcommittee and a former director of the Copyright Hotline. He was for many years the Chairman of antipiracy committee of the international music collecting society association BIEM and in that role coordinated and helped shaped anti-piracy initiatives internationally especially within the online environment.


Trained at SJ Berwin, qualified 1988; 1989-92 joined IF/IT group of Turner Kenneth Brown; 1992-2008 head of litigation at PAS and managed the music industry anti-piracy unit for ten years. He is very well known for leading the music industry in its fight against music piracy at a particularly difficult time. Nick pioneered the use of private prosecutions of copyright infringers for the music industry and he continues to use the criminal courts to prosecute persistent and systematic IP infringers across a number of industries and sectors. Nick joined DMH Stallard in 2008 as a partner to set up the media and entertainment group.
