Principal practice areas: immigration; public law & human rights; extradition; death penalty litigation in Africa. Immigration work includes business immigration (PBS, challenges to suspension/ revocation of sponsor licences etc.), European, asylum and human rights claims, deportation, family and student. Appeared in two of the Supreme Court cases heard by a panel of nine justices in 2010: USA v Norris (art. 8 ECHR in extradition context); R v Chaytor (parliamentary privilege and MPs expenses claims). Has dealt with several cases with crossover asylum/extradition issues, with particular experience of cases from Russia. Other recent cases include Hussein v SSHD (automatic deportation & unlawful detention, Admin Ct); Poland v Srama (successful challenge of European Arrest Warrant, Admin Ct). Acted with the Death Penalty Project in successful constitutional challenges to the mandatory death penalty in Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda and working on similar litigation in Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Also acting/acted (through FCO pro bono panel) for British citizens sentenced to death in DRC, Ghana and Kenya. Conducting several cases in ECtHR on alleged human rights abuses in Russia (killing of former Chechen President by FSB troops) and Azerbaijan (attacks on journalists). Consultant to OSCE on election legislation in transition democracies. Public access barrister.
