Position

Benjamin Newton is instructed to defend those accused of the most serious and complex criminal offences, and regularly appears in high profile and legally significant cases.

He has significant financial crime expertise, and has been instructed to defend in numerous SFO cases including the Euribor fraud (listed for trial in autumn 2017) and an alleged £7m Ponzi fraud for which the defendant was extradited from Malaysia. He is also currently instructed for the accountant of large property development company accused of cheating the public revenue of £8m, and in a national conspiracy to commit identity fraud against mobile telephone customers.

Ben is equally experienced in serious offences of violence, including allegations of murder and attempted murder at the Central Criminal Court. He also appeared in R v Twomey (and others) – the first judge-only trial on indictment in England and Wales, arising from allegations of £1.75m armed robbery at Heathrow Airport, and has furthermore conducted many cases of allegations of serious sexual offending, with clients including school teachers and clergymen.

In addition to criminal trials, he advises on and conducts fresh criminal appeals, and has expertise in extradition, courts martial proceedings, licensing, criminal-related public law, and health and safety offences.
