Position

Aparna specialises in revenue law with an emphasis on litigation at all levels, tax planning using offshore structures for high net worth individuals, non-residents and non-domicilaries; corporate reconstructions and reorganisations; tax planning for entrepreneurs. She has an extensive litigation practice with notable cases including British American Tabacco v HMRC (challenge to Part CTA 201 O); Moyles et al v HMRC ("Working Wheels" scheme); Boyle v HMRC (contractor loans scheme); Berry v HMRC (Gilts strip scheme); Lord Howard of Henderskelfe v HMRC (whether Reynolds portrait is a wasting asset); Stolkin v HMRC (EIS deferral relief); De Silva v HMRC (Partnership Losses/ Sch1A, 1 B); Tottenham Hotspur FC v HMRC; Dickinson v HMRC (APN JR); Archer v HMRC (Closure Notice JR); HMRC v Derry (TMA issues); Patel v HMRC (voluntary returns). She also lectures extensively, regularly contributes to tax publications and co-authored specialist tax editions. Career

Called in 1994. Before joining Devereux in 2014 she practised at Gray’s Inn Tax Chambers. Publications: Co-authored McCutcheon on Inheritance Tax (7th ed.); contributed to Mellows: Taxation of Executors and Trustees (chapter on ‘Trusts with a Foreign Element’); co-authored the 8th edition of ‘Offshore Business Centres’ published in 2008.
Taught tax and insolvency law to University of London post-graduates for several years. Lectured at Cambridge University in 2014.

Chair of the Capital Gains Tax Sub-Committee; member of the Succession Taxes Sub-Committee at the CIOT; Honourary Secretary of the Addington Society; member of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers.
