Crown Office Chambers specialises in professional and clinical negligence, product liability, personal injury, health and safety and all areas of regulatory law, insurance and reinsurance, commercial and construction work. Within these areas it is able to offer depth and breadth of experience at all levels of call, and is widely recognised as a market leader.
The set: Crown Office Chambers is the largest civil common law set in London, and currently has 87 practising members of Chambers. Operating from both buildings, it has administrative and reception facilities at 2 Crown Office Row.
Chambers offers a modern, flexible and friendly service. It operates block agreements and protocols for the return of paperwork and for court appearances. It is able to provide first class reception and conference facilities including video conferencing, and is supported by the extensive use of information technology. The size of Chambers has also permitted the development of a new centre for alternative dispute resolution, and Crown Office Chambers offers a fully administered ADR service.
Types of work undertaken: Chambers undertakes all forms of professional negligence, and in particular clinical negligence. It also specialises in construction-related claims (architects, engineers, valuers, residential, commercial and quantity surveyors); legal negligence (barristers and solicitors); and actions against other professionals (accountants and insurance brokers).
Product liability is a leading component of Chambers’ work. It has participated in most of the major multi-party claims which have so far been brought, including the tobacco, benzodiazepine, organo-phosphate, Vioxx, MMR and the oral contraceptive litigation.
Personal injury and health and safety/regulatory law are important areas of practice within Crown Office Chambers. Industrial accident, occupational disease, disaster claims, road traffic litigation, aviation/marine claims, environment and local authority-based disputes are all undertaken. Chambers acts for both claimants and defendants.
Members of Chambers regularly undertake defence work on behalf of companies and individuals charged with offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and safety regulations. This includes trial advocacy in both the Magistrates and Crown Courts.
Insurance and reinsurance work is a major element of Chambers’ business. Crown Office Chambers has strong links with the insurance market, and many clients are major insurers, underwriting syndicates and brokers. All forms of contentious and advisory work are undertaken, including work in the Commercial Court and in arbitration.
Members also conduct general commercial litigation and arbitration, including ICC arbitrations. These involve contractual claims of all kinds.
Construction and engineering disputes form a significant part of the workload of chambers. Members have substantial experience in the Technology and Construction Court, acting for employers, contractors, construction professionals, insurers and developers. Members of Chambers contribute to Emden’s Construction Law (general editor, Andrew Bartlett QC). Recent publications include Remedies in Construction Law by Roger ter Haar QC and The Law of Construction Disputes by Cheryl Chern.
Members of Chambers have particular expertise in other areas of law. Such specialities include administrative law and judicial review, employment law, commercial fraud and banking. Chambers also undertakes all forms of residual negligence and nuisance claims.
Direct access, conditional fee work and instructions in all forms of alternative dispute resolution are accepted.
