Position
QC specialising in professional liability (including lawyers, accountants and financial services professionals), product liability (including commercial products and claims in relation to food safety, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and blood products); insurance and reinsurance and general commercial litigation including civil fraud. Prior to her appointment to silk, held the appointment of Treasury Counsel and acted for a wide range of Government departments on issues including public law, EC law and human rights. Major cases include the employers’ liability insurance trigger litigation [2010] EWCA Civ 1096, a major liability insurance case concerning asbestos risks on appeal to the Supreme Court; the atomic veterans litigation [2010] EWCA Civ 1317, a large multi-party action arising out of the British nuclear tests in Australia and the South Pacific in the 1950s; R (McVey) v Secretary of State for Health [2010] Med LR 204, a judicial review challenging the vCJD Compensation Scheme; the porton down litigation, an action arising out of a programme of non-therapeutic experimentation with chemical warfare agents; Phillips v Symes (no 2) [2005] 1 WLR 2043, on the liability of expert witnesses; Medcalf v Mardell [2003] AC 120, a professional liability claim against barristers and wasted costs before the House of Lords; the BSE litigation, which arose out of the development of BSE/vCJD; the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease litigation, a product liability action relating to human growth hormone/CJD and Aspirin/Reyes Syndrome.

Qualified 1993, Inner Temple; QC 2009; consultant editor ‘The Law and Regulation of Medicines’ (2008); editor of ‘Jackson & Powell on Professional Liability’ (2007 6th ed) and general editor of ‘Human Rights and Civil Practice’ (2001); appointed to Treasury A Panel 2005; accredited mediator; called to Bar of Republic of Ireland.
