Position

Practises exclusively in the field of criminal law. Specialises in major and organised crime. Notable cases: R v Brian King [1999] Crim LR 496 (murder, led by James Stewart QC). Following his conviction, King appealed to the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division. In July 1998 Nicholas appeared at the appeal on his behalf against leading counsel instructed by the prosecution and without a leader. Following legal argument, the convictions were quashed. Appeared at the re-trial in February 1999, led by Graham Hyland QC. The case is now a leading authority on withdrawal from joint enterprise murder. R v Joseph Carolan [1997] (conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Led by Peter Kyte QC). R v Daniel Mansell [1998] (murder and robbery of a pensioner. Evidence included that of a ‘supergrass’. Led by Aidan Marron QC). R v Barbara Sunshine [2000] (fraud by company directors. Led by Graham Hyland QC). R v Derek Fallows [2000] (defendant extradited from the Irish Republic to be tried for offences of rape. Featured on Crimewatch. Led by Graham Hyland QC). R v Neil Hartley [2001] (nurse charged with administering noxious substances to patients. Led by Roger Thomas QC). R v Paul Lovell [2001] (murder and robbery. Featured on Crimewatch. Led by Roger Thomas QC). R v Azad Ali [2002] (conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Led by Rodney Scholes QC). R v Azhar Mahmood [2003] (attempted murder. Led by Graham Hyland QC). R v Daniel Spencer [2003] (attempted murder by defendant of his mother and brother).
