Ian's main areas of expertise are in computer technology fields (including hardware, software and business-related inventions) and automotive and aerospace fields. Ian acts for multinational corporations and SMEs in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and has a successful opposition practice. Ian's team serves Oracle, Juniper Networks and other computer technology clients. Ian also has a personal interest in automotive technology and along with Anthony Albutt handles a growing team supporting Toyota Motor Corporation and has seen a significant growth in the work received from Toyota. Ian is deputy chair of the European Qualifying Examination Board which is responsible for organising and conducting the European Patent Attorney Qualifying Examination over all EPC countries.
Chartered patent attorney 1988, European patent attorney 1989; European design attorney. D Young partner 1995; Ian worked as a patent examiner in the UK and European Patent Offices for over 11 years, as well as in-house in the IBM UK patent department for five years.
Ian has a diploma of the Institute of Linguists, and has German, French and Dutch as foreign languages.
