Darren has also recently increased his involvement with the Sony team, and in particular has worked closely with Jonathan DeVile in supporting a special project for Sony Corporation. Darren also manages world-wide prosecution of patent rights for telecoms architecture manufacturer Telsis Limited and a number of SME clients. Darren has recently been involved in the following case: Working with Miles Haines and with a Dutch patent attorney firm and UK based law firm Freshfield Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, successfully opposed two key European patents in the field of controlled source electromagnetic surveying for hydrocarbon reservoirs before the European Patent Office. The case involved parallel proceedings before the UK’s High Court where the UK patent (stemming from the European patent) was upheld on appeal. The patentee, represented by barrister Guy Burkill QC and instructed by Kilburn & Strode, lost in the opposition hearing at the EPO, thereby rendering the UK Appeal Court’s decision moot.
