This leading Midlands firm provides niche corporate and criminal defence services, including fraud and regulatory (health and safety, environmental, trading standards). Road traffic, civil liberties, mental health and commercial immigration matters are other specialities.
The firm: Cartwright King was established in 2000 from the demerger of the business defence and criminal defence departments of Freeth Cartwright, one of the largest firms in the Midlands. Operating from Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield city centres, and having a high profile, the expanding team attracts work and lawyers of the highest quality.
In June 2006, the business defence and criminal defence departments of Nelsons joined the practice, doubling its size, and in April 2007 the King Street Partnership also joined the firm. The Sheffield office opened in May 2007. In 2008, the firm merged with the specialist criminal defence firm of Lumb & Co in Derby to expand to 18 partners and 67 lawyers.
The firm’s business defence approach is noted for being professional and easy to deal with, tactically shrewd and technically capable yet with a straight-talking, no-nonsense approach. It believes in gaining a real understanding of the client’s problem in the context of its business, including visiting clients’ premises, and resolving it in a way that minimises disruption. The team has wide experience of commerce and industry, and considerable technical and scientific knowledge. It is familiar with all regulatory bodies and how to deal with them on clients’ behalf.
In criminal defence the firm has a reputation for being strong, for standing and fighting, and for getting results. It is practical, efficient and approachable. It has excellent contacts and if necessary, can involve legal specialists from other fields or forensic experts.
The firm is a member of the Very High Cost Case Panel and has contracts from the Legal Services Commission in all offices.
Types of work undertaken: Fraud, from the serious and complex to marginal transgressions, is a notable area of expertise. Services include representation of directors and professionals, theft, false accounting, money laundering and confiscation, as well as Serious Fraud Office cases, overseas matters and consultancy to commercial victims of fraud. Tax and other financial investigations are dealt with, including by HMRC, DBERR (DTI), OFT and others.
Health and safety expertise covers fatal accidents and major incidents, improvement notices, regulations breaches, food safety, etc. The firm has significant experience within the construction industry.
Environmental work includes investigations and prosecutions involving pollution, waste, abatement notices and appeals, and planning breaches.
Trading standards cases of all types, including trade descriptions, product safety, misleading prices and advertising, trade marks and copyright, consumer credit, and animal welfare.
Road traffic is a growth area and the firm has set up a specialist team to deal with challenging ‘Gatso’ notices, alleged speeding, avoiding disqualification and penalty points ‘totting up’.
Criminal defence work covers the whole spectrum but with particular expertise in heavy-duty crime, including drugs, murder, conspiracy, etc. Computer and download offences are a speciality.
Mental health, civil liberties and private immigration work is handled by dedicated, specialist teams.
Cartwright King will continue to expand its geographical area of operation and the size of its fraud and regulatory practice. Its criminal defence teams will continue to provide efficient services as the legal aid reforms continue.
