The UK Border Agency has issued fines to companies across the East Midlands over the past year for employing illegal workers. In Derbyshire alone, seven companies have paid fines amounting to over £60,000 and the number of fines handed out is sure to rise if businesses are not adhering to regulations

The number of major fraud cases dealt with by the courts reached record levels in 2010 following a rise of almost 20% on 2009 according to a survey by accountancy firm KPMG. Fraud specialist Mark Wilson, head of business defence at Cartwright King believes that this trend is set to continue.

Employers in the East Midlands are being urged to start the year with a stronger commitment to health and safety in the workplace. The Health and safety Executive (HSE) has reported that the number of work-related fatalities in the county has risen, in contrast to the number across Britain being at a record low.

In the past, unless a fatality was so serious that an individual who was a “controlling mind” of the company (usually a director) could be charged with criminal manslaughter, the company could not be pursued successfully for manslaughter and would be prosecuted for health & safety offences.
