Henrik deals with transport, maritime, aviation, and insurance law. In addition, he handles a number of international cases and has extensive contact to foreign clients and lawyers. Furthermore, he serves on several boards.

Henrik has broad experience in litigation and arbitration. He is admitted to The Danish Supreme Court and has dealt with several litigation matters of principal nature.
Henrik Kleis has for more than 35 years been an advisor to the Danish transport industry. He works closely with shipping companies, freight forwarding companies, airlines and other companies within aviation and is furthermore the preferred lawyer to the Danish ports. Likewise, he is frequently chosen as advisor by many Danish airports.

He is the author of more books on Maritime Law and Transportation Law and he has written more than 600 articles on the subject. Furthermore, Henrik has lectured Maritime and Transport Law at Aarhus Business School for  more than two decades. Before joining DLA Piper in September 2018 Henrik Kleis was heading the Shipping and Transport department of DELACOUR Law firm.

DLA Piper Denmark's shipping expertise encompasses financing matters, transactions, agreements and contentious work. Practice co-head Henrik Kleis is highly experienced in shipping disputes; he recently acted for the Port of Assens in a claim against UK insurers, which alleged that a UK tugboat caused damage to its quay. Thomas Bryde Hansen also leads the group and has broad expertise in shipping and transport, with a notable skillset in bankruptcy cases. Transport specialist Per Vestergaard Pedersen is also highly regarded.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
