Career

Joanna Sykes-Saavedra focuses her practice on the intellectual property and technology sector, with an emphasis on outsourcing and procurement as well as licensing and technology transactions. Joanna has represented financial services companies and other large corporations in connection with complex professional services agreements and license agreements relating to finance and accounting, information technology and other business process services.

Joanna also has counseled clients on gaming-related matters. She has represented an overseas wagering technology company in its transaction with a governmental agency and has advised clients on evolving regulatory requirements for internet gaming licensure in New Jersey. Joanna has represented clients seeking to launch Internet gaming offerings in the United States and has worked with state governments to procure and engage lottery private management services.

In addition, Joanna has been recognized by DLA Piper in connection with her pro bono service in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Representative pro bono matters have included advising a national non-profit in connection with charitable gaming, obtaining lawful permanent residency status for an unaccompanied minor from Central America, successfully negotiating a settlement in a trademark dispute for a local theatre company and supporting other local arts and education initiatives.

DLA Piper LLP (US) handles outsourcing arrangements in the software, insurance and media sectors and also assists governmental and public institutions with optimizing administrative operations. San Diego-based Gregory A. Manter advised Catalina Marketing Corporation on the outsourcing of its application development and maintenance services to Mindtree over a term of five years. The firm also advises the national police force of a Middle Eastern country in technological outsourcing negotiations. Other key individuals include Los Angeles-based practice head Vincent Sanchez, New Jersey-based associate Joanna Sykes-Saavedra and of counsel Anne Friedman, who also practices from the Los Angeles office. New York-based Praseeda Singh Nambiar joined as counsel in August 2018 from a consulting company.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
