Dirk Caestecker is recognized as an expert in corporate real estate transactions and as an excellent deal maker. In addition, he is a recognized tax consultant. He is also recommended in the Practical Law Company "Corporate Real Estate" ("Excellent in all aspect of commercial real estate."), and the Legal Business "European Legal Experts" (“Expert in Real Estate and also a Tax Expert”). All these recommendations are testimony of his exceptional expertise as a tax lawyer, corporate lawyer and real estate lawyer. For the same reason he has been the trusted legal advisor of three Belgian REITS listed on Euronext for over a decade, namely Intervest Offices & Warehouses, Vastned Retail Belgium and Wereldhave Belgium, and is he also acting for real estate investors/developers such as Group Van Leemput, MG Real Estate (Group De Paepe) and Redevco.

DLA Piper has a firm commitment to pro bono work, as is evidenced by its ‘New Perimeter’ programme, which is intended to provide long-term legal support in emerging markets worldwide. Another initiative involved advising the EU Covenant on Demographic Change on the setup of a recently-launched EU-wide non-profit entity, which currently has more than 180 international members. In addition, the Brussels Life Sciences team has entered into a global agreement to provide free global legal services on a world-wide scale to the European Association for Rare Diseases. In a recent highlight, the team assisted Helaba with the financing aspect of the €380m acquisition of the North Light/Pole Star offices by South Korean investors from Belfius Insurance and AG Insurance. Dirk Caestecker heads the practice. MichaĂ«l Bollen moved to Laurius in July 2018.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
