Sophie is a member of DLA Piper's national development planning and infrastructure consents practice, part of the wider Real Estate group.


Sophie is a Legal Director who advises both public and private sector clients on the full range of planning and development related matters; including strategic planning advice, appeal work, planning obligations and infrastructure agreements, CIL, judicial review, rights of way, assets of community value and large scale development consents (DCO, Transport and Works Act Orders and project specific legislation, such as HS2). Sophie has particular know-how in the field of compulsory purchase, both promoting and objecting to Orders and settling matters of compensation. Sophie previously worked as a legislative draftsperson and has experience of drafting detailed documents, including international legislative instruments, and matters of  legislative interpretation.


Sophie obtained her law degree (LL.B Hons) from the University of Liverpool before undertaking her LPC at the College of Law in Chester.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
