Within: Real estate and construction

Jointly led by the ‘knowledgeable’ Francesco De Blasio in Rome and Paolo Foppiani in Milan, DLA Piper ‘is able to provide strong and high-level advice on any kind of real estate transaction’. Olaf Schmidt is also highly regarded; he recently acted for developer Omnam on the purchase of two historic properties in the centre of Rome and assisted Kildare Partners with the indirect purchase of more than 200 real estate assets from Banca Intesa through a fund structure. The Student Hotel Group received advice on the acquisition of a development plot in the centre of Florence and on the related town planning issues. The group welcomed Giuseppe Mele and Chiara Anceschi in December 2017 and February 2018 from BonelliErede and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer respectively. Guido Inzaghi left in October 2017 to join BIP - Belvedere Inzaghi & Partners, while senior counsel Rosemarie Serrato joined Nctm Studio Legale in February 2018.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
