Juan Picón advises on corporate operations, focusing on mergers and acquisitions, capital markets and venture capital or private equity operations (LBOs, MBOs and other corporate structures) – both in national and international transactions. Juan is also engaged in some of the most important capital market operations that have taken place in Spain. His clients include companies in sectors like health, chemicals, telecommunications, banking, food and energy. He is the Managing Director for Europe & Middle East. In addition, he is Co-Chair of the Firm’s Latin American practice, which covers activities across all of Central America, South America and the Caribbean and includes DLA Piper’s presence in Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil.


Juan currently is the firm's global co-Chairman . He joined the firm as Country Managing Partner for Spain in February 2006. In 2007, he became International Group Head for Corporate, joined the Executive in 2012 as Joint Managing Director, Groups & Sectors and in 2014 was appointed as Joint Managing Director, Europe and Middle East in 2014. Juan is also Co-Chair of the firm's Latin American practice. He is Secretary and Member of the Board of Instituto Atlántico de Gobierno, Chaired by former Spanish Prime Minister, Mr. Aznar Juan has previously worked in prestigious global law firms, and also in various large companies.

DLA Piper LLP (US)’s strong commitment to Latin America, evidenced by its growing network of offices and associations across the region, is paying considerable dividends. It now advises a range of multinationals on their interests in the region and represents a growing number of Latin American family groups. Recent matters include advising Central America and Caribbean located asset management firm Putney Capital Management, on the sale of a 70% interest in a leading fuel retailer in the Dominican Republic to Total. It also advised Oaktree on the €214m sale of Spanish baking group, Panrico, to Mexico’s Grupo Bimbo. Lead partner on the deal Juan Picón, is global co-chairman of the firm and occupies an integral role in the development of the firm’s Latin America practice; he also advises a range of Spanish clients on their Latin America interests. Also integral to the firm’s regional expansion, Miami-based US head of the Latin America corporate practice, Francisco Cerezo, and New York’s Robert Gruendel, who is global co-chair of Latin America, are also both prominent names in the market. Eduardo Gallástegui and Camilo Martinez are the key names in Mexico City and Bogotá, respectively.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
