César Herrero is a partner of the finance and projects group in the Madrid office. He has degrees in law and business administration from the CEU and was awarded the Luis Vives prize in 1997. He completed a post-graduate studies programme in private law (DEA) from the UNED (with honours). He has also completed the Executive Leadership Program 2013 at the Harvard Business School. Prior to joining DLA, César worked 9 years for global law firm. Prior to that, he worked as attorney with the in-house corporate banking and investment legal counsel at Citigroup and was part of the legal banking department for a large global law firm.


Restructuring, corporate finance, project finance and acquisition financing. César has been involved in the most relevant transactions in recent years of the financial and banking sector in Spain. He has wide practical experience in the restructuring, leveraged finance, project and corporate finance areas, both nationally and internationally.

DLA Piper LLP's client portfolio includes numerous banks, such as BBVA, CaixaBank and Société Générale. It advised a syndicate of banks led by Banco Santander on the financing of Técnicas Reunidas' new working capital. On the borrower side, it assisted Neinor Homes with a bridge facility agreement granted by JP Morgan; as it is governed by English law, Madrid-based Spain and UK qualified lawyers cooperated on this matter.   • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
