Position

Neil Bowker has worked in the Litigation and Regulatory group in Birmingham for 25 years and is UK Group Head.   He has considerable experience advising on all aspects of dispute resolution and risk management. In his day to day practice Neil manages many large multi-disciplinary teams in high-value, complex claims across multiple industry sectors. Neil's caseload has a strong international element and involves cases with significant commercial sensitivity and reputational implications. Neil is well used to engagement with large organisations and presenting to Boards on challenging legal situations, he is also heavily involved in the management of various firm relationships

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

    In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
