The firm

DLA Piper is a global law firm that provides its clients with legal and business solutions locally, regionally and internationally using integrated teams of lawyers with experience that spans a broad range of disciplines. DLA Piper is widely recognised for its pioneering approach and extensive geographic reach, which enables the practice to look after the business issues that matter to its clients- whether they are large or small. Clients of DLA Piper include single-owner startups, local and household name companies, multinationals, financial institutions, FTSE and Fortune 500 enterprises and their subsidiaries, public bodies and governments.

DLA Piper Weiss-Tessbach is one of the leading corporate law firms in Slovakia, providing complex legal services drawing on international professional experience for its clients, including Slovak and international companies, financial institutions and public organisations.

The philosophy of the Bratislava practice is based on two fundamental principles: providing legal counselling of the highest quality and creating, as well as maintaining, long-term relationships with clients. Both principles are continuously implemented in the firm’s work through exercising comprehensive legal services, which are provided by its highly experienced lawyers. It is of the highest importance to the firm to not only act as the client’s legal advisor with respect to large-scale projects, but also to provide them with broad legal advice regarding their day-to-day life.

Areas of practice

The practice is highly acknowledged in its core areas of expertise (commercial and corporate, M&A, banking and finance, general commercial law, real estate) and advises its clients as a full-service practice in all relevant areas of business law, including administrative law, employment law, IT and telecoms, technology, intellectual property, venture capital and capital markets.

The firm has well-established relations with clients of various backgrounds. The practice advises medium-sized enterprises, as well as leading (often publicly listed) international and domestic industrial groups, service providers, banks and other financial institutions and individuals.

The firm has established a particular reputation for its ability to handle cases in international cross-border contexts. The firm is renowned for its expertise in the structuring and implementation of projects and transactions in Slovakia, as well as in other countries in central and eastern Europe. It carefully monitors the on-going developments in the central and eastern European region with the aim of combining the needs of the constantly changing international legal market and industry, while also upholding the high standard of service that the firm has always been able to offer to its clients.

  • Sentencing guidelines for corporate manslaughter

In February 2010 the Sentencing Guidelines Council (the SGC) issued definitive guidelines to courts on imposing appropriate sentences for corporate manslaughter and health and safety offences causing death. The SGC states that fines imposed on companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter should not fall below £500,000, while fines in respect of health and safety offences that are a significant cause of death should be at least £100,000. Crucially, the SGC declined to provide for a fixed link between the imposed fine and the turnover or profitability of the offending company.
