Career

Devin Swaney, a partner in Dechert's global finance practice, focuses on structured finance and real estate matters, with a particular emphasis on securitization and commercial mortgage-backed securities. Mr. Swaney represents issuers, underwriters, mortgage loan sellers, servicers, investors, operating advisors and sponsors with respect to public and private asset-backed securitizations, and he works on commercial and government sponsored deals collateralized by performing, re-performing and distressed assets. He acts as counsel to registrants with respect to regulatory filings and reporting obligations under the Securities Act and the Exchange Act, and he represents financial institutions, funds and investors with regard to the creation, sale and purchase of interests and participations in commercial real estate and mezzanine debt.

Dechert LLP's practice covers commercial real estate finance, as well as the acquisition and sale of commercial real estate debt products. , while the firm also advises on loan origination, acquisitions and dispositions, securitizations, restructuring, commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) and bankruptcy matters. The firm's client base includes issuers, underwriters, loan sellers, servicers, operating advisors and investors. New York-based Laura Swihart and Devin Swaney continue to act for key client Freddie Mac, and this year advised on around 50 deals with an aggregate value of $50bn. Swaney also advised First Foundation Bank as a mortgage loan seller in the securitization of loans secured by multifamily properties. Philadelphia-based Richard Jones and Charlotte-based Stewart McQueen advised The Bancorp on a $304m CMBS deal sponsored by The Bancorp Bank, a Delaware state chartered commercial bank. Another highlight included advising Blackstone Mortgage Trust on a $1bn collateralized loan obligation, while the firm also also acted for Citibank and Goldman Sachs on the $1.9bn refinancing of loans secured by luxury Bahamas resort Atlantis Paradise Island. Philadelphia-based Jason S Rozes, David Forti and New York-based Krystyna Blakeslee are also recommended. Newly promoted partners include Boston-based Christopher Desmond, Samuel Gilbert; Philadelphia-based Gennady Gorel, Kenneth Hackman and New York-based Matthew Fischer. Matthew Hays joined as partner in the Chicago office from Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Kahlil T Yearwood left the firm for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP. Other clients include Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, BlackRock, Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs.

Key figures in the team include practice head Richard Jones and Laura Swihart, who are singled out for their 'hands-on approach' and 'practical guidance'. Swihart and Devin Swaney act for Freddie Mac in MBS offerings, which totaled approximately $50bn in 2018, and Jones, who splits his time between Philadelphia and New York, advised a real estate finance company on one of the largest CRE CLOs to be issued since the 2008 financial crisis. Also in the CLO space, Charlotte-based John Timperio advised Mariner Investment Group on multiple new-issue CLOs, and also acted for Golub Capital in a series of middle-market CLO transactions. Another name to note in the Charlotte office is Christopher Duerden, who has gained recognition among his peers for his work in middle-market and broadly syndicated CLOs. Sean Solis left for Milbank, but Matthew Hays joined the Chicago office from Kirkland & Ellis LLP.
