Akin specialises in the resolution of engineering and construction disputes, as well as facilities management and PFI related disputes. His expertise includes all forms of dispute resolution from dispute avoidance and ADR (conciliation and mediation) to adjudication, arbitration (domestic and international) and litigation. Akin has assisted clients in resolving disputes relating to defective design/workmanship, build quality issues, delay and disruption claims, loss and expense claims, professional negligence, final accounts, service level performance obligations and interpretation of contractual terms. Akin is also experienced in acting as a “project counsel” on live construction and engineering projects in relation to delay or cost overruns, assisting clients or contractors in managing claims, negotiating settlement and avoiding disputes.

Dentons is a major player in the London and international construction disputes market, with ‘real strength across all levels of seniority making it adept at handling big-ticket litigation.’ Akin  Akinbode and Gurbinder Grewal head the contentious team; Akinbode is ‘strategically astute, with an excellent following in technically complex international construction and infrastructure disputes’. As an adjudication specialist, Grewal is ‘an oracle of construction law and a master tactician'; he advice to the official receiver and special managers on the construction aspects of the liquidation of Carillion. Grewal is also representing the ground remediation contractor Geofirma in £30m multi-party court proceedings relating to the defective design and construction of a warehouse in Winsford, Cheshire. Senior associate Esther McDermott is ‘determined, hard-working and always on top of the case’, playing ‘a leading role in Dentons’ major disputes.’ Associate James Scagell is ‘dedicated, committed, a real winner’, and also one to watch.  John Woolley leads on the non-contentious side, recognised for his work in the power and infrastructure sector. Recent work includes advising Bugesera Airport Company Limited, a joint venture between longstanding client Mota-Engil and Aviation Travel and Logistics Holdings Limited, on the development of a new US$418 million international airport in Rwanda under a PPP structure with support from the Government of Rwanda. The team are also advising Kenyan developer Gulf Energy on delivering Kenya's first coal power as part of the Lamu Port, South Sudan, Ethiopia Transport project (LAPSSET), a major international project to link Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan with a rail, road, fibre-optic and pipeline corridor.
